Leisurewood's Shoreline and Breakwater Protection
The Geotube® System
Leisurewood Development designed the shoreline and
breakwater protection of Leisurewood’s shoreline with the assistance
of Ercon, Inc., an environmental engineering firm specializing in
technology associated with controlling soil erosion in coastal and
beach areas, and major river systems. Rather than conventional
bulkheading, a Geotube® system was selected for the following
reasons:
Geotubes® are a cost effective
alternative compared to traditional construction materials and
methods.
The estimated life of the
product is estimated to be 50 years by its manufacturer, compared
with a useful life of 5 to 10 years for traditional construction
methods.
They are effective not
only for shoreline protection, but allow the Developer to restore
and straighten eroded shoreline that would not be available using
traditional methods.
They are easy to install
beneath the water surface and have minimum impact on the
environment.
Geotube® erosion control
systems have been used in numerous projects as a preferred
alternative to traditional techniques for shoreline protection and
restoration, and breakwaters, in consultation with the
Environmental Protection Agency, Texas Natural Resource
Conservation Commission, Texas General Land Office, Texas Parks
and Wildlife, Corps of Engineers, National Audubon Society and
U.S. Fish and Wildlife. Geotubes® are fabricated from a high
strength geotextile that has proven to be storm resistant, even
stopping erosion from hurricane force wind and waves.
Plans for construction of shoreline improvements
and the breakwater that created a sheltered harbor for a private
resident marina at Leisurewood were approved by the Corps of
Engineers and the Trinity River Authority, as shown in the
Shoreline Site Plan on the web site.
The marina will also include a covered marina
pavilion area that will be available to all residents. The entrance
to the pier/walkway connecting the shoreline and the private marina
will be located along the east property line of the subdivision. A
second breakwater system and sheltered harbor is located at the west
end of the property. In addition, the approved plans provide for two
additional, smaller marina/boat slip areas that may be constructed
based on demand for expanded facilities, as well as amenity areas,
observation decks and platforms throughout the marina and waterfront
areas.
